The Magic of Nick Drake.

On the twenty-fifth of November, 1974 the world lost one of its most beautiful song writers and lyricists. It was a very sad day but the saddest thing of all was that he had been so little known. Nick Drakes’ life had only been twenty-six years long but he had recorded three incredible studio albums.

Nick found life to be a very painful experience and he chose to leave it by overdosing on amitriptyline. He had led a troubled life and these tablets had been prescribed to ‘help’ him to cope. There are more people now who know about the music of Nick Drake than there ever were when he was alive. Just like many great artists, Nick was unrecognised until it was too late.

The albums that he left behind are full of beautiful and insightful songs. He was a skilled singer and guitarist but he could also play proficient saxophone, clarinet and piano. His gentle, whispering voice is now familiar to hundreds of thousands of music lovers the world over and his songs have been covered by other bands on numerous occasions.

‘Five Leaves Left’, ‘Bryter Layter’ and ‘Pink Moon’ are all masterpieces in their own right. Just how Nick’s talent went so unnoticed for so much of the time is an absolute mystery. Since his death his songs have continued to touch people’s hearts and many fans make a pilgrimage to his grave each year in Tanworth-in-Arden. The local church has a special service leading up to Christmas every year where many of Nick Drakes songs are sung.

The story of his short and difficult life is a sad one but he has left us all with some wonderful songs. Tracks such as; ‘Way to Blue’, ‘Which Will’, ‘Cello Song’ and ‘Northern Sky’ will never fade away.

And lastly, in my opinion all of those who are into this thought of a more planet friendly lifestyle really need to check this out. This Enigin Scam blog has some really inventive ideas for firms who are concerned about thier environmental impact, I am really liking them right now.
