Invasion of The Musical Doppelgangers.

Have you ever noticed just how similar some singers are to others? There are quite a few people in the music scene who are uncannily similar to the artists of years gone by. But this is not necessarily a bad thing; in fact, it can work out rather well…

For example, if you are a fan of Joan Armatrading then there are frustratingly few of her studio albums to listen to. However, if you also enjoy the music of Tracy Chapman (because she sounds so similar), then there are a lot of extra albums to collect! And let’s face it, Tracy Chapman sounds like a carbon copy of Joan Armatrading.

But this is not the only ‘double’ to crop up in music. What about Kate Bush and Tori Amos? If you listen to Mrs. Amos’ early work you could quite easily mistake it for that of Mrs. Bush. I wonder if the two of them have ever met? Imagine if they recorded something together; that would be very interesting, wouldn’t it?

And then there is the Bob Dylan/David Gray sameness. When I first heard ‘White Ladder’ I thought it was Dylan; to me, his voice sounded almost identical. I don’t know about anyone else, but I can easily imagine Bob Dylan singing many of David Gray’s songs.

But these are only a few examples of ‘musical twins’. If you think about it, you will soon be able to come up with several others. It’s all a tad creepy, isn’t it? I wonder if it is the result of some secret cloning program?

Maybe some of these singers are so influenced by their musical heroes that they actually end up sounding just like them. It might seem a little bit farfetched, but how many dog owners end up looking like their beloved pets?
