Listen Up: Queens Of The Stone Age

Where to begin with talking about Q.O.T.S.A.? What hasn’t been said about this band that’s worth saying?

Don’t shoot: I grew up listening to everyone but Q.O.T.S.A. I’m ashamed to admit that they were one of the few bands that I didn’t get around to listening to while everyone else was–people said they were awesome but I suppose I didn’t really think they could be that awesome; because of that I missed out on the conversations about how good Songs For The Deaf was. I’ve tried to redeem myself since then by listening to the album repeatedly and I think that after ten years I may have just managed to do so…

If you’ve not heard them, do yourself a favour. Don’t be like I was!

Led by infamous front-man Josh Homme, the music is furiously aggressive, wildly all over the place, and yet somehow also tight, to the point, and satisfyingly put together: in other words, music that doesn’t make sense but sounds absolutely amazing—all the makings of that rare breed of sound which is accessible to fans way beyond those that normal rock and roll bands usually attract: put simply, they are a pure rock anomaly. Constantly experimenting, never resting too long on a song before changing it up completely.

Homme is genuine–this man cares about music, even though he really doesn’t care if you like or dislike him or his music, as is the case with the rest of the band; Q.O.T.S.A.—and indeed anything Josh Homme is involved with, such as new super rock group Them Crooked Vultures—has and will always been known for its wondering guitar, unbeatable pounding drums and ability to surprise at any given moment. And it isn’t all about Homme, of course. For Songs For The Deaf a number of other artists joined the band in the studio, laying down vocals and at times all but taking over to form an entirely new sound.

I was a complete insomniac last night and decided to go searching round the web for something to keep me preoccupied, turns out the Heroes Forum is not only a superior way to waste time but also fairly entertaining!
